Songs of Freedom

You've heard about South Africa and the cruel apartheid laws
And how a man called Mandela spoke out in freedom's cause
Spent twenty-seven years in jail for his courageous stand
At last he was released and now he's President of the land
And he's still singing songs of freedom
And peace and justice and human rights

2. The miners with their sweat and pain, they paid the price of coal
And then the Tories closed the pits, put thousands on the dole
But the lads of Tower Colliery had faith in what they knew
Swore they'd run the pit themselves and show
Wheat working folk can do
And now they're singing songs of freedom
And peace and justice and workers power

3. Now the fight for women's' suffrage was bitter, long and hard
In Holloway they sang this song
March! March! Swing we along! out in the exercise yard
And Ethel Smythe, who wrote the song, imprisoned there as well
Conducted with her toothbrush from the window of her cell
For they were singing songs of freedom
And peace and justice, and womens' rights

4. We are the Sea Green Singers and we sing for you today
Supporting those in struggle both at home and far away
So why not come and join us in the fight that must be won
For a world more just and equal and more human and more fun
And we'll be singing songs of freedom
And peace and justice for evermore
The whole world singing songs of freedom
And peace and justice for evermore
