CLIMATE CRISIS CAROLS

1. TURN THIS MESS AROUND
(Tune: Winter Wonderland - in C, on G)

Sirens wail, are you listening?
In the sea, plastic’s glistening,
With forests ablaze
We can’t stand and gaze,
Gotta turn this global mess around.
Say goodbye to the old days,
Say hello to some new ways,
Determined and strong
As we go along,
Working hard to turn this mess around.
Citizens’ assembly will connect us,
And help us make a plan that is agreed.
Nothing we encounter will deflect us,
People know what other people need.
After time, we’ll remember
How we sang in December,
The effort we made
To face unafraid
What it took to turn this mess around.

2. DING DONG MERRILY ON HIGH (in Eb, on Eb)
Ding dong merrily on high
The temperature is rising.
All that carbon in the sky,
It isn’t that surprising.
Falalalalalalalalalala
Our lifestyles are excessive.
Here we are below, below,
Where life on Earth is dying.
And I know I know I know,
The future’s terrifying.
Falalalalalalalalalala
Our lifestyles are excessive.
Pray you dutifully go
And partake in truth telling.
May you beautifully show
Concern for this our dwelling.
Falalalalalalalalalala
Our lifestyles are excessive.

3. JINGLE BELLS
(in E, on B)
Dashing through the snow
In a eco-fuelled sleigh,
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way. Ha ha ha!
Bells are ringing out
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
This eco song tonight. Hey!
Jingle bells, no more wells
There’s a better way,
Keep fossil fuels, in the ground
Go green without delay, hey!
Jingle bells, diesel smells,
Petrol’s had its day.
Santa’s now a vegan
With a cycle powered sleigh!

4. O COME ALL YE REBELS
(in E, on E)

O come all ye rebels, hopeful and determined,
O come ye, O come ye to sound the alarm.
Sing with one voice that this is an emergency,
O come let us amuse them
O come let us enrage them
O come let us engage them
To heed our demands.
We call for justice, justice for the planet,
We call for ecocide to be outlawed.
We call on leaders to wake up and make
changes
O come…
Halt global warming, stop oil exploration,
Halt big developments & keep the planet green
Stop all this nonsense constantly distracting us,
O come…

5. CLIMATE CHANGE IS COMING TO TOWN
(in Ab, on Eb)
You’d better watch out, you better not frack,
You’d better not say it’s gas that we lack,
Cos climate change is coming to town.
Coal seam gas is everywhere,
It’s easy to frack If you don’t really care
Climate change is coming to town.
And everyone’s affected,
By gas and coal and oil,
There’s cleaner, greener ways to live,
So let’s leave them in the soil.
You’d better watch out, you’d better not frack,
You’d better not say it’s gas that we lack
‘Cos climate change is coming to town.

6. MARKETING IS EVERYWHERE
(Tune: Good King Wenceslas – in F, on F)

John McDonnell was distressed,
Saw his assets stranded.
Told his counsellors “Divest!”
As the folk demanded.
There’s no money making here,
Climate change is cru-el
Change the pension, bring us cheer,
No more fossil fu-els
Marketing is everywhere
Leading up to Christmas.
Greedy corporations know
It’s time to do big business.
Selling things that no-one needs
Pulling in more profit
It’s a silly fairground ride
We should all get o-o-ff it.
Present shopping is a chore
If you choose to do it.
Opting out or making things
Bids a farewell to it.
No more rush and no more crush
No more blind complying.
No more on your credit cards
No more panic buy-ing
Give the gift of love this year
Resist commercial forces.
You will be far happier
And save the world’s resources.
Sing this message loud and proud
Less stuff and more caring.
Love and time and hope are free,
Help the world we’re sha-ring

7. BABY, IT’S WARM OUTSIDE
(in C, on C)
I really can’t stay
(but Baby, it’s warm outside)
I’ve got to go away
(but Baby, it’s bad to fly)
This protest has been
(Been hoping that you’d lock on)
So very nice
(I’ll glue your hands – there’s no more ice)
My mother will start to worry
(The children already worry)
I never had a record before
(Listen to the oil rigs roar)
So really I’d better scurry
(Beautiful please don’t hurry)
But maybe just a half a chant more
(People got the power and more!)
Policemen might think
(Baby, it’s bad out there)
Ask what’s in my bag?
(They love to use Section 1)
I wish I knew how
(You’re taking a stand now)
To break this spell
(Here take my flag, see, you look swell)
I ought to say, no, no, no, sir
(Those bobbies are moving closer)
At least I’d tell my kids that I tried
(And you’ll look ‘em right in the eye!)
I really can’t stay
(Oh Baby don’t hold out)
But baby, it’s warm outside.
I simply must go
(But baby, it’s hot outside)
The answer is no
(but Baby, it’s HOT outside)
Your protest has been
(We’re hoping that you’ll sit in)
So nice and warm
(Come block a road, we’re gonna swarm)
Those hippies do look suspicious
(We’ve got some policemen with us)
My brother’s at Heathrow airport
(Seas are drowning tropical shores)
One person can’t make a difference
(Look how many there are of us)
But maybe just one holiday more
(Haven’t booked? So give up before)
I’ve gotta get home
(But Baby, you’ll miss us there)
Say lend me a badge
(She’s giving them over there)
You’ve really been grand
(We’re strong when we’re holding hands)
But don’t you see?
(Why would you walk away from me?)
It’s bound to be news tomorrow
(Think of our children’s sorrow)
At least there will be plenty of chat
(If they’re hurt cos we didn’t act)
I really can’t stay
(There’s no time to hold out)
Cos Baby, it’s warm
(And getting more warm)
Baby it’s warm outside!

8. WE WON’T GO UNTIL WE GET SOME
(in F, on C)
We wish to ignore the Crisis,
We wish to ignore the Crisis,
We wish to ignore the Crisis,
But the truth becomes clear!
Dire warnings they bring, to me and my kin,
We wish to ignore the Crisis,
But the truth becomes clear!
No fossil fuel mining!
For nature we are pining,
For the creatures declining,
As the truth becomes clear!
High tidings it brings, to lap at your shins
We wish to ignore the Crisis
But the truth becomes clear!
We won't go until we get some,
Our climate justice MUST come
We won't go until we get some!
We’ll chain ourselves here.
Dire warnings they bring, to you and your kin
We wish to ignore the Crisis
But the truth becomes clear!

9.DAYS OF CRISIS
(in D, on A)
On the 1st day of crisis my planet gave to me...
1. A water shortage in our country.
2. Failed staple crops
3. Quick trade laws
4. High mounting debts
5. Empty Promises!
6. State-issued rations
7. Worse air-pollution
8. Health-workers striking
9. Riots in the cities
10. Bring in the army
11. Every bank collapsing
12. Things I fear to mention
Before the days of crisis,
Please nation show to me,
Your plans for less than 1.5 degrees!

10. SILENT NIGHT
(in Ab, on Eb)
Silent night, Holy night!
All are quiet, to the plight.
On the TV, little is said,
Of the crisis up ahead,
Put our heads in the sand,
Put our heads in the sand.
Silent night, Holy night!
Children quake at the sight.
Those in power show little concern,
Fossil fuels continue to burn,
When will voices be heard?
When will voices be heard?
Silent night, Holy night!
May the world, see the light.
Share the wisdom, start to act
And respond to science and fact
For the sake of this earth
For the sake of this earth.

11. HARK! THE HERALD
(in D, on A)
Hark! Authorities complain
“Crusties on the street again!”
They want us to go away
But we will go on each day.
Joyful rebels break the silence,
Undeterred by any violence
Time for inaction is gone
Business as usual can’t go on
There is no uncertainty
This is an emergency.
Hark! We still hear people say
“Everything will be okay”
They are telling blatant lies
Sing the truth up to the skies.
Glaciers melting, deserts forming,
Earth is sending out a warning.
Time for inaction is gone
Business as usual can’t go on
There is no uncertainty
This is an emergency.
Hear oil corporations say
“We get greener day by day”
They don’t care about the earth
Only for their own net worth
It’s a smokescreen, don’t be drawn in
They are fuelling global warming
Time for inaction is gone
Business as usual can’t go on
There is no uncertainty
This is an emergency.

12. WHITE CHRISTMAS
(in Bb, on D)
We’re dreaming of a white Christmas,
With seasons turning as they should.
Where we face the crisis, and polar ice is
Protected, for everybody’s good…
We’re dreaming of a white Christmas,
Where children’s futures look more bright.
May the planet be healthy and clean
And may all our Christmases be green.
